can you work at a bank after BK?

We discharged BK7 5 years ago. My credit score is still poor but there are no new defaults since that time. Some medical stuff went to collections in error that I haven't cleared up yet (insurance snafu). But overall I don't think it looks like we are living beyond our means or way in debt. We just have a mortgage and student loans and one small credit card balance.

I have been unemployed for 2 years and just saw an opening at a bank for a job I would be a good fit for (my field is IT). I am worried tho that a bank wouldn't hire me to due to the BK history.

Wondering if anyone else has an inside scoop...I thought there were certain fields you were permanently barred from after BK.

I don't have an answer to your question (sorry) but I am marking this one to see what others have to say. I was even trying to think up an analogy but came up with nothing because, quite frankly, it's not like filing BK is illegal. It's not like you stole something. It's not like you said you hate cops and now you're trying to join the force. It's not like you flunked out of school and now want to be a teacher. It's not like you have a horrible driving record and now want to drive a school bus. That being said, it doesn't seem right to me that if you have filed BK you should be barred from any jobs, period. Except maybe claiming to be a good financial planner (LOL). Best of luck to you and your job hunt!

i have seen a few theads about this situation....darn i searched and couldn't find a one!!!

i have a "bit' of recall......about one or two of the situations and hopefully someone else will chime in with "newer" info...however, from what i recall it depends on the bank...some ask in a contract or application if you ever filed...and i also recall one person's wife whom was already working at the bank...and i didn't think we heard the "final" answer as to what happened then.

but remember....5 years ago is a LONG time in the scheme of what is happening today......one person on the forum even got a "financial" job with a major company!!! but he explained the situation right off....and we was in the progess of filing..so hopefully you'll be fine!!!!

      best of luck!

Thanks...I probably won't even get called. But if I were to get an interview I'd hate to find out later I never had a chance due to the BK.

Thanks! I appreciate the positive thoughts!

I know I would be good at the job...I just feel like they probably have a million applicants. Hopefully my resume makes an impression.

It really does depend on the company. I saw that CCJOE explained the situation right off, and once the offer was made that is what I did and now 3 weeks later no response, no answer to emails. Very sad

Don't let a BK stop anyone from applying for a position. If a search is done in this forum, there are numerous postings on employment and BK issues to be found. The general rule of thumb is that if one has a BK or bad credit on their credit reports, know that that information can be a deterrant for anyone applying for a job in the financial fields (i.e., bank-related, retail, etc....anyplace where there could be access to cash, account information, charge account information, etc., etc.). That's just the way it is. What usually happens when a job position is open is that resumes are gathered, those who appear qualified for the job are gleaned out and interviews set. At the time of the interview a job application is filled out and the interview held. The prospective employee is advised a background searches/credit searches will be done (that is agreed to when one signs the job application and provides their SS#), references will be checked if they were requested and the employer will get back to the prospective employee. Also, sometimes on a job application, the question appears - "Have you EVER filed for bankruptcy." That must be answered honestly as that information will appear on any credit check run and can also appear on a background search as it is public information. If one wants the job badly and feels qualified for the job, it never hurts to bring up your BK at the interview and be honest about the situation (previous job lost and you could not recover, bad divorce, medical situation, etc.) and that the BK will not have any affect on your performance at a new job.

There are many marvelous past postings on here regarding all this - do a complete and thorough search for a ton of information.

Best of luck in getting the job.

I applied for 2 bank jobs to work in the credit card depts, and got hired for one. The one that did not hire me... did not even get a callback... was Chase, and I BK'd them. I am glad I got in with my other job, because we have a lot of Chase people who come to work for us, and the word is they treat their employees as bad as they treat their account holders! I've also heard every customer who calls in is usually raging furious. At my bank out of 55-60 calls a I probably escalate no more than 4 a day, on a good day none. I think working for Chase would set my nerves on edge.
